A WV Favorite.

The boys and I are doing a geography study called Road Trip USA.  It's a fun program that includes general information about each state - capital, industry, state flag and state animal - that kind of thing.  But the fun part of the program is the "extras".  Each state has a local favorite dish to make and a craft.  So far, we've had lobster tails with Maine, hamburgers with Connecticut and Ben & Jerry's with Vermont.

I did find one slight error though for WV.  It lists our local favorite as a slaw dog.  You know, a hot dog topped with coleslaw.  Now don't get me wrong, a slaw dog is pretty great....but it's not really what's special to WV.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you.....the pepperoni roll!

This is the true WV speciality.  Well, at least North central WV.  You can find them in every gas station and mini mart around.  You can get them at restaurants topped with Oliverio's sauce and peppers and half a pound of fresh mozzarella.  Or, you can make them at home.

You can really make this recipe as easy or as difficult as you'd like.

I choose easy.  You should know that.

Here's what you need:

Frozen bread dough - thawed
Pepperoni - sticks or sliced

All you do is pinch off a piece of bread dough and wrap it around the pepperoni.
I then place them in a greased 9x13 pan to rise.  Once they've risen, bake them at 350 degrees for about 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.  Rub a stick of butter over the tops after you've taken them out, just to make them look pretty.

Of course, you could make your own dough or add cheese to the pepperoni before baking.  Really, whatever you'd like to do.

Pepperoni rolls are great to take on trips, because they don't need any refrigeration.

A true WV favorite.

Give it a try.

Sometimes, we skip a step and use the pizza dough Wal-Mart sells. :)
